A grunge classic remastered
The second re-release of Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll proves that the third time’s the charm. The original albums Dry As A Bone and Rehab Doll were released in 1987 and 1988 respectably. They were then re-released as a compilation album in 1990 by Sub Pop Records. Well, now Sub Pop has released the albums as a remastered deluxe edition for new and old audiences alike. The songs sound great in their new form, full of energy and life. Plus, the reciprocal eight-track versions of some of their hits helps bring new light to the group and their songs.
There are obviously a lot of songs on the two albums combined, but some worth mentioning for those who are just discovering the group are “Forever Means,” “Porkfist,” “Swallow My Pride (reciprocal eight track)” and “Unwind.”
“Forever Means” has a strong drumbeat to begin the album, before the guitar riff comes in and the moaning vocals take off. It’s easily one of the most powerful songs the group created, full of raw talent and emotion. The guitar solo towards the end is fantastic as well and will captivate audiences just as much as it did in the late ’80s and early ’90s.
“Porkfist” begins with a fast drumbeat and guitar riff, and the vocals are more conversational at times, not fitting directly with the music. Mark Arm’s vocals show a great range in this song, as they go from a talking style to a high-pitched tone. It’s a fun song and truly shows off Arm’s raw talent.
“Swallow My Pride (reciprocal eight-track)” is a subdued sounding version of the song, coming in as if from a pair of speakers. It gives a more authentic sound to the song, helping listeners picture themselves listening to the group back when they first arrived on the scene. It’s a very typical grunge song, and it’s full of life. The guitar riff throughout is very recognizable as well, proving the song’s longevity.
“Unwind” is off of Dry As A Bone, and the guitar riff to start the song off sounds as if it’s being played live. It starts out sounding like a more bluesy song, showing that the group was able to explore various styles while remaining in the grunge genre.
