As of January 25, the U.S. government had experienced its longest shutdown in its history, with the partial shutdown occurring for 34 days and counting (though now it appears to be over, at least for a few weeks). With Democrats not abiding by the president’s request for more funding for a $5 billion U.S.-Mexico border wall, numerous government agencies have ceased operations leaving hundreds of thousands of employees without work or without pay.
According to Pitchfork, in an act of graciousness, Nile Rodgers & Chic have released 600 free tickets to furloughed government employees or those working without pay. The tickets are for their January 26 show at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, just outside the nation’s capital. Rodgers tweeted his support for those suffering from this historic meltdown and encouraged them to apply for the tickets through a form listed on his website.
Rodgers, a three-time Grammy award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is known for his stylistic guitar playing that remains an invaluable source of inspiration within the industry. He is also a stellar record producer and Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, having worked with acts like Madonnna, Duran Duran, Lady Gaga, and Daft Punk to produce numerous album and single hits. Rodgers co-founded Chic alongside bassist Bernard Edwards in 1976, going on to release several dance and disco hits including Le Freak, Everybody Dance, and Good Times. Today, they are known as Nile Rodgers & Chic, and have released their first album in 26 years last year titled, It’s About Time.
