The song “Lisztomania” by Phoenix experienced a huge increase in streams following a video surfacing which depicts Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing to the 2009 hit. The video, which was recorded in 2010, depicts Ocasio-Cortez dancing to the song while on a rooftop back when she was in college. It was shared around the internet last month in an attempt to undermine the newly elected Congresswoman and criticize her for being too immature to be in the House of Representatives. The video had the opposite effect, however, as Ocasio-Cortez’s followers online flocked to support her and felt that the video proved to them yet again that she was one of the people instead of being out of touch like many other lawmakers. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been making waves in US politics over the past few months and her dancing to “Lisztomania” has only enhanced her public image.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the House of Representatives from New York, a member of the Democratic Party and is the youngest woman to ever be elected to the United States Congress. In a very quick timespan the Congresswoman has won over many supporters with her platform of radical reforms and changes she would like to see in America. Since becoming elected, Ocasio-Cortez has faced criticism from many from the Republican Party, including personal attacks based on her age and experience in politics. Most of these are meant to lessen people’s faith in the newly elected representative and stop her from becoming more popular. None of these tactics have been working for the GOP, however, with the popularity of Ocasio-Cortez’s dancing video as just one piece of evidence.

Some of the more drastic changes Ocasio-Cortez wishes to see are a 70% income tax on those making over 10 million dollars a year and the passage of a “Green New Deal” which would provide support for the creation of an infrastructure to transition the United States to using completely sustainable energy over the next 15 to 20 years. The Congresswoman also supports the defunding of ICE and the transition of the United States to a single-payer healthcare system.
Phoenix has been very supportive of the video of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, tweeting out the video to its followers and congratulating the Congresswoman for being the youngest woman ever elected to United States Congress. The popularity of the video has been overall beneficial to both Ocasio-Cortez and Phoenix, as voters have both tuned into the video and the song itself in support of the politician. This has resulted in a drastic increase in the amount of streams of “Lisztomania,” with weekly streaming numbers for the song more than tripling from January 3rd to January 10th.
