Canadian musician Devin Townsend has announced his newest album has been completed. The album, which is titled EMPATH, has been slated for release March 29th and will coincide with Townsend’s upcoming European tour. The tour is unique in that in addition to the show, Townsend will be doing a Q&A session with fans about his creative process and his musical style. The tour will also be performed by Townsend acoustically, giving fans an opportunity to hear his music in a brand new light.

Devin Townsend has created a huge name for himself in the music industry over the past 20 years, cementing his place with songs like “Life” and “Hyperdrive.” One of Townsend’s most recently musical projects was his 2014 album, Casualties of Cool. The Casualties of Cool album brought fans a diverse range of songs, this mainly stemming from the fact that it was made in collaboration with vocalist Ché Aimee Dorval. More soothing and aesthetically focused than Townsend’s other work, the album showed fans another side of the musician and proved that he is much more well-rounded as a performer than many thought. The songs “Daddy” and “Ether” are a few of the highlights from the album. Now fans are excited to see what new direction Townsend’s next album will take him.

The EMPATH album is the product of over year and a half of work, and is set to be one of Townsend’s most dynamic and artistically free projects. Townsend has stated that a major motivator for the creation of this album was an emphasis on making what he wanted creatively, instead of being held down by what the industry or other musicians tell him he should make. The project is an expression of Townsend’s artistic skill and a combination of all the influences in his life. One of the main components of EMPATH are the various features and artistic influences from a variety of different musicians that are present on the album. Among these is the album’s musical director Mike Keneally; who gained fame working for Frank Zappa in the early 1990s. The album as a whole is set to introduce fans to a whole new side of Townsend’s artistic abilities and talents. The full tracklist for EMPATH can be found below.
