A few of music’s most prominent figures will be getting some more street credit to their name in New York City. The legendary Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, and Woodie Guthrie are set to be honored with street signs in their respective hometowns in New York. After their last meeting of 2018, the New York City Council voted 48-0 to honor the three artists According to Billboard, “The Notorious B.I.G. will be saluted with Christopher Wallace Way in Brooklyn; The Wu-Tang Clan will receive it’s honor in Staten Island with the Wu-Tang Clan District; and Woody Guthrie Way will be located in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn.”
Cultural Advocate LeRoy McCarthy told Gothamist, “I’m happy that NYC officials are finally giving the city’s indigenous ‘Hip Hop’ music the respect and recognition that it deserves.” He continues to say “It took a long time and lots of hard-work to advance the Christopher Wallace Way & Wu-Tang Clan District street co-naming, but ya know what, Hip Hop Don’t Stop.”
The three heavy hitters will join amongst 161 other co-named streets that have been named in 2018. They will also join other fellow musicians who have had New York streets named after them in past years including Joey Ramone Place in Manhattan, U2 Way in Manhattan, and Run DMC JMJ Way in Queens.
