An eclectic girl power album
The rockin’ female-led group Mother Feather has released their second full-length album, Constellation Baby, following 2016’s Mother Feather. Featuring Ann Courtney on lead vocals, Elizabeth Carena on vocals and keyboard, Chris Foley on guitar, Gunnar Olsen on drums and Seth Ondracek on bass, the group is a great mixture of rock, pop, psychedelia and metal. The cover art for the album is a great representation of how wild of a record it is. It features Courtney and Carena in ’80s inspired makeup, hair and outfits, looking like a collage. Constellation Baby is an eclectic album, with each song being very different from the last.
The first song on the album is “Red Hot Metal.” It begins with a fast-paced guitar riff, before launching into vocals that can be best described as hard rock. It’s one of the more traditional rock songs on the album, but the vocals from Courtney and Carena makes it stand out. They get very melodic during the chorus, showing that rock and roll can have a softer side. The next song on Constellation Baby is “Man, I Wish You Were Here.” Though the title certainly shares the message of the song right off the bat, it’s still a very surprising and unique song. The vocals have a distorted sound to them, giving them more of an indie rock feeling. The bass line is very catchy as well, making it a song that would work wonderfully on the radio.
Some other notable songs on Constellation Baby are “Desert Island” and the titular song “Constellation Baby.” “Desert Island” is a pop-esque song, with the drumbeat being the most prominent instrument. It features Courtney’s melodic vocals again, showing just how wonderfully unique her musical style is. A fun part of this song as well is that the lyrics have a mention of the band’s name in them, saying, “Call your mother feather.” “Constellation Baby” is a soft song, featuring psychedelic sounds and trippy lyrics. “May your heart be open as your third eye / Let it show you the light / Let a girl be your guide.” It’s a beautiful song, and it makes sense as to why it would be the title of the album.
The final song on the album is “I Blow A Kiss.” It starts with vocals light as air that are accompanied by the keyboard. As the song continues, more instruments come in and more vocals accompany. It’s an epic sounding song, full of distortion and a powerful guitar riff, before launching into a quieter ending. It’s the perfect way to end the album, as it feels like an epic conclusion.
