Psychedelic band Holy Wave has released an experimental music video for their song “Dixie Cups.” The band, which focuses on creating a unique sound through the use of heavy reverb and powerful synthetics, has been making music for around a decade. Holy Wave was founded by a group of musicians from El Paso and has released 4 major albums of music. Each of their projects has attempted to capture listeners with their psychedelic production style and echoing voices. Holy Wave’s most recent album, titled Adult Fear, was released in March of this year and contained the song their new video is focused upon, “Dixie Cups.”
Adult Fear was the band’s fourth album to be released and continued much of the same artistic style that gained them a following in the first place. The album begins with the song “Nation in Regress,” which is a lighter track based highly on dreamy production to capture listeners attention. Moving from there, the band gets to the longest song on the album, “Habibi.” At over 8 minutes in length, “Habibi” is one of the longest tracks in the band’s career and brings fans on what feels like a psychedelic journey. The various sections of the track blend together to create a beautiful piece of psych-rock. The song “Dixie Cups” immediately follows this track and is a slower and more unified song. The band’s instrumentals on this track showcase their unique talents and the way they bring these together in their music. Overall, the song makes listeners feel as if they were in a day dream.
The video itself is made to look like an old VHS home movie, a style that has become very popular in recent years. In the video, psychedelic colors and distortion overwhelm the traditional old school elements of the recording. By blending these together, the band has created a unique visual experience that is just as, if not more, pleasing than the music itself. Throughout the song, the video also cuts to shots of the band playing their instruments overlaid by more psychedelic distortions. The video uses heavy green and blue saturation to create a beautiful landscape for the song, one which amplifies the aesthetic qualities of the song itself.
Recently, Holy Wave has been on a small Texas tour with the group The Black Angels. Over the course of the final week of the year, Holy Wave will join The Black Angels at four different shows, also performing alongside The Mustachio Light Show and other guest artists. The first show of this mini tour was on December 27th in Houston, Texas. The bands have a show each night until their last performance in Austin on New Year’s Eve. Holy Wave is sure to put on a great show, most likely performing much of their content from Adult Fear. The group’s new music video for “Dixie Cups” can be found below.
