Disliking Christmas in a cheery manner
The members of Say Sue Me are extreme believers in the ’90s forever movement. The band focuses their style directly on ’90s indie vibes and beach rock ‘n’ roll made popular by bands like The Beach Boys.
The South Korean natives have been in business since 2012, have released their first studio album We’ve Sobered Up and an EP titled Big Summer Night. The quartet made up of Choi Sumi on vocals and guitar, Kim Byungku on guitar and backup vocals, Ha Jaeyoung on bass and Kim Changwon on drums have surprised their fans and American audiences everywhere with the surprise release of a special Christmas EP titled Christmas, It’s Not A Biggie. The four-track EP takes its listeners on a magical slay-ride exploring just how non-magical Christmas really is.
The EP leads off with the title track “Christmas, It’s Not A Biggie.” What sounds like a tried and true testament to the beloved era of beach rock is actually an extremely catchy foot-tapping song about just how much we over-advertise the Christmas holiday and for all the wrong reasons. The track follows a basic indie-beach rock guideline of heavy guitar use, rhythmically hypnotizing drums and easily remembered lyrics.
“Too Expensive Christmas Tree” is next on the EP and is strictly a track to groove out to. No lyrics, just instruments, and that’s all it needs. The three-minute instrumental track comes straight from the beaches of California with its use of layered guitars and upbeat rhythms.
The second half of the EP sticks to the theme of being over Christmas but gets a bit more gloomy. “Out Of Bed” is the most subdued track on the EP with its melancholy tone and theme of just how sad the holidays can be. Sumi drags one word into the other and creates a feeling of drowsy loneliness.
The EP closes with “After This Winter,” a track that is depressing in its tone and lyrics but carries a small undertone of a brighter horizon. Sumi once again creates a dragging and longing feeling for each lyric to pass as she sings, “This world is scary and cold / I miss the light so bad / We were just sitting in the dark / Thinking about nothing / The icicles are starting to cry / The small light of candles lit the room.”
Christmas, It’s Not A Biggie is an EP from the hearts of four humans who just don’t see what all the fuss is about when it comes to the holidays and can’t wait for it to be over.
