mxdwn PREMIERE: Electronic-Pop Duo Karmic Release Raw Take on New Year’s Classic “Auld Lang Syne”

For much of America, every year kicks off with a group sing-along of “Auld Lang Syne,” a simple folk melody set to the famous poem by Scotsman Robert Burns. Today, we are premiering Los Angeles electronic-pop duo Karmic’s take on this classic.

The two singers’ voices complement each other beautifully on this simple and raw take on the New Year’s classic. A quiet piano quietly and tentatively guides the melody of the song, hammering home the nostalgic lyrics.

“The holidays are some of our most favorite time of the year! A time for us to express our emotions and bring out our soft side while we reflect on the year,” the band said in a statement. “‘Auld Lang Syne’ is about celebrating and saying farewell to the last year which is why it is traditionally played on New Year’s Eve. It is also about remembering the people who have passed on in our lives and the relationships we have lost. We dedicate this cover to our loved ones who have passed over the year, and to everyone else who has gone through this. Sending so much love into the new year!”

Karmic consists of singers Laura Baruch and Kylee Katch, who weave a tapestry of classic electro-based pop that draws from the past while also pushing boundaries. While their cover of “Auld Lang Syne” showcases the two singers’ excellent vocals and strong chemistry, it’s a much more subdued affair than most of their tracks. The duo have yet to release a proper album yet, but have dropped several singles in the last couple of years.
