M.I.A. Shares Unreleased Video for “Reload”

Rapper M.I.A. has shared an unreleased song and music video for “Reload,” a track that appears on the soundtrack of her highly-acclaimed documentary MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.

According to Pitchfork, the previously unreleased track was written and recorded with the help of Elastica’s Justine Frischmann back in 2004. Justine wrote the beats after experimenting with the Roland 505 beat machine and M.I.A. wrote her own lyrics. This track was recorded just before the release of M.I.A.’s debut album Arular. From there, the two shot a fun, home-made video in Frischmann basement. The video also features M.I.A’s friends Rudy, Marsha and Deboarah.

MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. is a film directed by Stephen Loveridge that documents the critically acclaimed artist’s journey from being a refugee from Sri Lanka to becoming a pop star. Premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, it won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award and has been since winning awards and receiving recognition. The film has been released through digital platforms in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada as of right now, but will be expected to be released in other countries across the globe.

This new release of music and documentary follows up the rapper’s 2016 full-length album AIM. An album where the artist focuses on social issues important to her and has a message about the refugee crisis.

Michael Izquierdo: I'm a third-year student at The New School studying Journalism & Design in order to tell stories that are often misrepresented or unreported on. I want to take my writing and report on stories within the LGBTQ+ and Latinx community. In terms of music, play me a smooth jazz tune, an upbeat pop song, or an unheard indie artist and I'm sure I'll become infatuated by the music. I am always here to share someone else's story, to uplift a voice in any community.
