Rhiannon Giddens Announces New Project Our Native Daughters and New Album Songs of Our Native Daughters

Rhiannon Giddens has announced details for the upcoming collaborative album Songs of Our Native Daughters. Many of the songs, like the lead single “Mama’s Cryin Long,” written by Giddens, use excerpts and real-life stories from slave narratives as well as generational stories about slavery that had been passed down in members of the group’s own families.

Giddens collaborates with roots singers Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell (Birds of Chicago) on the collaborative album, Songs of our Native Daughters. The project is a collection of original material inspired by New World slave narratives and composed by the four songwriters.

The album is set for release on Smithsonian Folkways on February 22 and was co-produced by Giddens alongside her longtime collaborator Dirk Powell. It is Giddens’ first collection of new music since 2017’s Freedom Highway, which came out the same year she became a MacArthur Genius Award recipient.

Giddens comments about the project, “Gathering a group of fellow black female artists who had and have a lot to say made it both highly collaborative and deeply personal. I see this album as a part of a larger movement to reclaim the black female history of this country.”

Kelly Tucker: Originally from Los Angeles, I grew up listening to all types of music. My first concert was Aerosmith with Skid Row, then moved on to concerts with Metallica, Lollapalooza, Guns N’ Roses, Soundgarden and more. One of my favorite shows of all time was when I was in college and someone took me to see the Allman Brothers play. I also scalped a ticket to see Pearl Jam and the amazing Eddie Vedder sing his heart out. My professional career started in 2000 at Nielsen Business Media where I was an assistant in a sales department and later got promoted to advertising account executive. When the recession hit in 2008 and the magazine was sold, I took a job at a call center and later got promoted to assistant to the CEO and COO of a global company. In 2017, I took a position at a pharmaceutical agency, and now currently responsible for coordinating meeting logistics for physicians and pharma reps throughout the United States. In my spare time, I work at Peace4Kids a non-profit in South Los Angeles and write screenplays in hopes to make a breakthrough.
