The Van’s shoes corporation will be launching a House of Vans Pop-Up in Detroit, Michigan early next year, featuring performances by Thundercat, Danny Brown, Protomartyr and Joyce Manor. This event will take pace from January 24 -27 at The Jefferson School, a historic building in West Midtown Detroit and will feature numerous art galleries in addition to the musical performances.

“Detroit has a rich and eclectic history across music and art, along with a burgeoning skate scene that closely aligns with Vans’ own history and mindset,”explained Brooke Burt, Vans’ Senior Manager of Lifestyle Brand Marketing. “It is truly an honor to bring House of Vans to life in Detroit alongside this incredibly creative and inspiring community.”

Prior House of Vans pop-ups have included Paris, Montreal, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Mexico City.  Two permanent House Of Vans locations have also been opened in Chicago and London.

This pop-up mixes in local legends such as Protomartyr and Danny Brown, with other well regarded acts such as Southern California’s Thundercat and Joyce Manor. Each day of the pop-up will feature an eclectic mix of music, with R&B and neo soul bassist Thundercat joining punk band Protomartyr and soul singer Amber Mark on the first day, rapper Danny Brown joining rock band Joyce Manor and cellist Kelsey Lu on day two.

The event will also be hosting SESSIONS, a series that is made to highlight emerging local talent over to the festival. Detroit, or artists from surrounding areas artists who are interested in performing at the event are encouraged to send music to submitmusic_houseofvans@vfc.com.

Fine artists featured include Niagara, Jay Howell, Greg Hunt, Ellen Rutt and Joe Brook, who will also be hosting a variety of workshops. Juxtapoz Magazine will be hosting a zine workshop for the event, and additional local photography will also be showcased.

Thundercat recently wrapped up a festival appearance earlier this year at the Adult Swim Music festival in Downtown Los Angeles. Earlier this year he released an eclectic music video, for an eclectic musical pairing, with “Show You The Way,” featuring prog rock legend Michael McDonald and country singer Kenny Loggins.

Danny Brown has been consistently touring since the release of his 2016 album Atrocity Exhibition. Taking its name from the Joy Division track of the same name, the album was critical success, however the rapper stated that the project put him in debt, due to the samples he paid to have clear for the album.

Protomartyr recently teamed up with prog rock band Preoccupations on a split 7″ record that featured both bands. The record contained their cover of the Preoccupations track “Forbidden,” that was originally featured on the band’s self-titled debut album back in 2016. Both bands also toured with each other earlier this year.

Joyce Manor have recently announced a show at the Hollywood Palladium, that is set to take place next January before the House of Vans pop-up. The band recently released their album Million Dollars to Kill Me this past September to moderately positive reviews.
