2018 Has been a busy year for indie band Mercury Rev. Coming off a special 20th anniversary tour for their Deserter’s Songs, the band followed up and announced new album featuring countless artists from a broad spectrum of genres. The album is a concept album which aims to recreate the Bobbie Gentry classic The Delta Sweete.
In the buildup towards the album release next February, Mercury Rev recently released a track off the album which features Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star. The song performed together is the alluring “Big Boss Man.”
The re imagined cover offers a slower, more reverb-ed out version of the old folk/bluesy spectacle. The album The Delta Sweete marks a significant era of Gentry’s career as it was released right after her single “Ode to Billie Joe” topped charts all over the country.
Although Gentry’s style varies greatly from the tone of the Mercury Rev cover, the band still successfully captured the feminist vibes from the original with the help of Hope Sandoval’s soothing vocals. The rest of Mercury Rev’s album appears to be hiding a lot more similar surprises given the list of various featuring artists on their roster. In addition to covering every track on the legendary The Delta Sweete, Mercury Rev has also included “Ode To Billie Joe” on the official track list as a the only song not on the original Gentry album.
The album is slated for release on February 8th 2019 and is currently available for pre-order on the band’s official website and on all major music services.
