Annie Lennox, the lead singer of Eurythmics has shared first new song in eight years with “Requiem For A Private War.” The song, which is featured in a new film called A Private War. The film is directed by Matthew Heineman and stars Academy-Award nominee Rosamund Pike, Stanley Tucci and Jamie Dornan. It tells the story of foreign correspondent Marie Colvin, who wrote for the UK’s Sunday Times. She was killed in Syria in 2012 while covering a siege of a Syrian city of Homs.
The song, “Requiem For A Private War” as well as the video that accompanies it is a moving depiction of the pain one goes through when under fire. The video shows Lennox in the studio creating “Requiem” and mixing in footage of the film which adds to the heartbreak that Lennox is singing. Combining her words and the tragic and yet inspiring footage of Colvin’s life through the Heineman’s film is truly a work that needs to be seen and listen to.
Lennox recently sat down with EW in an interview where she talked about how she won’t be making any new music nor is she writing other songs any time soon. “I haven’t made any plans to write any other songs,” she said. “It’s a strange one. I mean, I’ve had such a powerful and deep relationship with music and expression and seeing and writing lyrics and the whole artistry of channeling emotions for people to also receive or to enter themselves. It was such a huge profit for me for most of my life — in fact, all my life.” She went on to say that she’s focusing her attention on “global feminism,” supporting causes like the Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network. “I’ve had such a powerful and deep relationship with music and expression and seeing and writing lyrics and the whole artistry of channeling emotions for people to also receive or to enter themselves. It was such a huge profit for me for most of my life — in fact, all my life,” she said.
In the interview, Lennox also expressed her feelings regarding the new song: “Normally I’m really, really critical of my performances or my recordings,” adds Lennox. “I don’t want to be in any way sentimental about any of this, but if Marie were here, I feel that she would feel that this was worthy of her.”
