The Mexican garage punk band Le Butcherettes have recently announced their upcoming fourth studio album, bi/MENTAL. The album will be released on February 1st in the upcoming year and will be the first full-length album released through their new label home, Rise Records.
The 13-track project follows the band’s hustle of releases earlier this year, such as the struggle/STRUGGLE EP and the single “spider/WAVES.” Following in the footsteps of that EP, the iconic guitarist Jerry Harrison of the former Talking Heads returns as a producer for the album, continuing to cultivate the band’s unique sound. The new album consists of three features, including the likes of punk-rock singer Alice Bag on “mother/HOLDS,” alternative singer Mon Laferte on “la/SANDÍA” and Dead Kennedys’ frontman Jello Biafra on the early single “spider/WAVES.”
Along with the new album announcement, the band released a new song entitled “father/ELOHIM,” accompanied by a music video directed by Gus Black. The video was shot in a live concert setting that captures the energy of the crowd and Le Butcherettes in tune to the upbeat vocals by singer Teri Gender Bender and slick beats of the drums. The music video immerses the viewer as if they’re in the crowd, jumping along to the music.
Le Butcherettes originally garnered attention when singer Gender Bender and former drummer Auryn Jolene performed eye-catching performances in the underground scene in Mexico. The duo would dress up in 1950s women’s fashion and incorporate props on stage, such as feather dusters, brooms, bloody aprons and even a real pig’s head. As the band progressed, the new members joined as old ones left. The band was able to put out its first single, “Henry Don’t Got Love,” in 2010 when Omar Rodriguez-López of the rock band The Mars Volta reached out and helped produce their music. Over time, the band was able to release three full-length albums, Sin Sin Sin (2011), Cry Is for the Flies (2014) and A Raw Youth (2015) under Rodriguez-López’s label.
As the band finishes their November U.S. tour with Death From Above, Le Butcherettes sent out a tweet announcing their headlining tour for the upcoming album. The tour begins in February and will last until early March. The band will be performing in states all across the U.S., including a stop in Mexico and Canada.
