Portugal’s NOS Alive Festival has begun announcing its upcoming 2019 lineup. The festival, which takes place in Lisbon, Portugal, is the annual home to alternative rock and indie fans of all types. NOS Alive, which began as the Optimus Alive! Festival in 2007, has taken place annually in Portugal each year for just over a decade and has strove to bring attendants some of the biggest names in music each time. The next edition of the festival is set to take place from July 12-14 2019. So far the announced performers are The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure and Bon Iver, all of which are sure to bring great shows to the event.
The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the most well known bands of the 1990s, with a discography ranging in age from the early 90s all the way to earlier this month when they released their newest album, Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1. The project was teased by a few singles ahead of its release, one of the most notable being “Knights of Malta.” This album has shown that the group is still able to put their all into their music, with the song “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)” emulating the sound that brought them fame all those years ago. The group will most likely include some of their greatest hits in the set, with the most likely candidates being the global hits “1979” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.” Overall the group is set to wow audiences this upcoming Summer.
The Cure are another powerful group slated to appear at the NOS Alive Festival. The band is another old school favorite; with The Cure being a large player in the music scene since the 1980s. While the group has not released a ton of new material in recent years, they have continued performing and growing as musicians during this time. Their set at the festival may include hits such as “Friday I’m in Love” and “Close to Me.” The third act that has been announced is well established singer-songwriter, Bon Iver. Gaining a lot of traction after his 2008 album For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver, whose real name is Justin Vernon, embodied the folk sound that became popular in early 2000s. His third studio album, 22, A Million, was released earlier this year and continued to build upon his previous successes. Vernon displayed his mastery over his voice and his artistry on this record, along with showing off the talents his fellow musicians who perform alongside him. This set is sure to be one of the highlights of the festival for anybody who likes folk rock.
UPDATE 12/21/18: A few more artists have been announced for the NOS Festival recently, including Robyn and Vampire Weekend. The festival has also added on the groups Chemical Brothers, Cut Copy and Idles to the list of performers going to Portugal next summer. The list of great performers continues to grow for the NOS Festival.
