Circling back and adding new flavors
With ten studio albums out and a fairly consistent time between each, Payable on Death (P.O.D.) shows no sign of slowing down. Ever since their third studio album, The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, the nu metal band has solidified their success and presence within the genre. For those that are unfamiliar with the term and P.O.D., nu metal means that the band brings in elements from other genres such as hip-hop, alternative rock, etc., which is clearly evident in their albums.
Circles, P.O.D.’s album that was released November 16, shows from track one, “Rockin’ With The Best,” that they can continue to draw and deliver beyond metal and keep a familiar, distinct sound, even after 26 years. Not even 10 seconds in the first song, straight rap reaches fans ears and sets them off on a journey that will keep them guessing. From rap to hints of hip-hop mixed with metal, each song captures fans attention for different reasons.
Unlike other albums, Billboard reports that the band was extremely open to co-writing for Circles with The Heavy, a British rock band that formed in 2007. While there are tracks that delineate P.OD., lead vocalist Sonny Sandoval said that The Heavy is responsible for “bringing different flavors and texture into the mix, such as the loops and distorted sounds on “Panic Attack.” Also, “Domino” was completely due to the British rock band.
Overall, this album highlights the benefits of being open to collaboration from anyone with a different eye. Even after being around for almost 30 years, P.O.D. saw no problem with consulting a band that has been around for only 11 years. Within this 11 track set album, Circles will leave fans satisfied and craving more, especially with the last song, “Home.” As the ending song, its a true send off for the album that is expressive of P.O.D’s metal prowess.
