Music duo LUMP has released a new music video for their song “May I Be The Light.” The group is composed of producer Mike Lindsey and singer-songwriter Laura Marling, who began working together in 2016. Prior to this Mike had been a member of the groups Tunng and Throws. The futuristic folk band, Tunng, being Lindsey’s main priority. Throws was a more electronic duo act with him and fellow Tunng member, Sam Genders. Before her time in LUMP, Laura Marling was known for her hit song, “Ghosts,” off of her 2011 debut album Alas I Cannot Swim. Following this she released five more solo albums, the most recent of which was Semper Femina in 2017. This album got the singer nominated for a Grammy in 2018 for Best Folk Album and contained stunning songs like “Soothing” and “The Valley.”
Now the two are working together as LUMP, and released their self-titled debut album in June of 2018. The most popular song on the project was titled “Curse of The Contemporary,” and featured Marling’s haunting vocals and Lindsey’s unique style of production. Another notable song from the album is the heavily folk-inspired anthem “Hand Hold Hero.” It uses more traditional instrumentals than much of the album and features a powerful central baseline. Mike Lindsey’s background as a member of an electronic band definitely shows throughout the album, as it is a dominant feature in most of the tracks. The two performers fit together seamlessly and work to compliment each other in a variety of ways.
The duo’s new music video is for the song “May I Be The Light,” and features many absurdist and mind-bending animated scenes. The song itself features a pop-rock vibe and psychedelic attributes that pair well with such a strange video. Marling’s vocals on the track are entrancing and once again work together with the videos visuals to add to the absurdity. It features drawn renditions of both Lindsey and Marling in increasingly interesting forms. The video prominently features mouths on Marling and Lindsey’s forehead and stomach, respectively, that do the vocals for the song. It also features the album’s mascot, a furry monster that is also seen on the album cover. The monster is seen walking and dancing through the woods in between scenes of the artists and of other musicians playing instruments. The beautifully drawn background images add to the calming aesthetic of the film. The video is meant to be a relaxing and entertaining watch and does a good job at doing so.
