Pantera was formed by Paul and his younger brother Dimebag in 1981. Anselmo joined the band in 1986 after replacing their former lead vocalist. Pantera had released three albums before Anselmo took over vocals, but did not gain much attention. His inclusion helped usher in the band’s new sound and look, which helped the band begin to gain popularity.
Dimebag was shot and killed by a gunman at a concert in 2004. His older brother Paul died from dilated cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease.at his home in Las Vegas in June.
Pantera had broken up in 2003 due to disagreements between Anselmo and the two brothers. In recent years Anselmo and Paul had worked toward making amends, but a Pantera reunion never seemed to be in the cards.
Instead, Anselmo has toured with other projects, including his current band, the Illegals. The band is in the middle of a winter tour across the west coast. In September, they performed at Berserker Fest, along with Tombs and King Parrot. In December 2017, the band released a new single, “The Ignorant Point,” off their new album, Choosing Mental Illness as a Virtue.
