Mink’s Miracle Medicine is an rock duo from West Virginia that despite using genre conventions from indie rock, alt-country and traditional Americana, create an altogether unique sound. They released their new album Pyramid Theories in October, with the lead single being the title track. Today we have the premiere for the lyric video for “Pyramid Theories,” which features a creative cut-and-paste video made by vocalist Melissa Wright.
“I spent hours clipping pieces of old National Geographic books, maps, and magazines to make this stop animation video,” said Wright. “I placed the images on the floor of our living room next to our woodstove and listening to “Pyramid Theories” over and over again, moving the images around and trying to keep my cat away from the project. She made it in though.”
The song is defined by thudding bass line and jangling guitar with the kind of crystalline guitar that simultaneously provides atmosphere and energy to the track. Meanwhile Wright’s vocals are clearly defined by her Appalachian roots while being layered with a bit of rock ‘n roll aggression, placing the band’s in a zone that would fit in perfectly with the mid-90s indie rock greats.
The new album was written when Wright and her bandmate Daniel Zezeski were stranded in Pittsburgh when their bus broke down. With the extra time on their hands, the duo took advantage and got to work planning what would become their new record. After returning home, Wright immediately got to work creating what would become Pyramid Theories. According to the band, there are several “Pyramid Theories” songs, which are in literal terms about ancient aliens building the pyramids, though taking on a more metaphorical theories about humanity.
