Bay Area slam poet turned rapper George Watsky, better known by his last name Watsky, has shared a new track entitled”Mean Ass Drunk,” which is set to be on his upcoming 2019 album. This track joins “Welcome To The Family” and “All Like Whatever,” that were released earlier this year, which will also join the upcoming album.
“Mean Ass Drunk,” hosts an old fashioned garage and blues rock sound going over its instrumentation, with a light organ touch, a heavy blues guitar and bass line on top of the steady rhythmic beat. This blend of old school garage rock and hip hop is similar to work done recently by DJ Shadow on tracks like “Nobody Speak featuring Run The Jewels.”
The instrumental backs Watsky’s rapid-fire delivery style, as he raps and strings together his rhymes with quick speed and consistent pacing. In addition, this track contains a consistent hook, between each verse singing the songs title “mean ass drunk,” in the same quick style.
Watsky began his career as a spoken word rapper performing across numerous coffee shops and smaller venues, receiving acclaim as early as 2006 by becoming the Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Champion. Later on, the rapper went viral in 2011, after a video entitled “Pale kid raps fast,” was uploaded to YouTube in 2011.
Beginning in 2009, Watsky began to pursue a music career more frequently, and began releasing steady releases beginning with the self-titled Watsky, in 2009, which was followed by Guilty Pleasures in 2010. Since his career took off, Watsky has been known for connecting with his fans as an independent artist.
“I don’t know, you know I’ve been touring for years now and I’ve gone from rookie to veteran in a way. When I was playing college campuses doing my spoken word poetry, which I did for about five years from the time that I was maybe 20 years old to 24, 25,” Watsky explained in an interview with the Rocky Mountain Collegian this year. “I would play for like 15, 20, 30, 40 people and I would always stay afterward. I had a little box of CD’s I would drive myself. I’d play at a coffee house and I just always stayed after, I mean that’s what I did. I was playing for so few people it wasn’t hard to do. So as the shows got bigger I just never stopped doing it and never felt appropriate to stop and so you know, it’s important I think to connect with the people who connect with your music. They’re the reason that I get to live my dream and I’m very grateful for that.”
Earlier this year the rapper had an update for his collective Invisible Inc. which announced that they would release their first album in over decade. In addition to this release, and the upcoming album, the artist has several projects planned for the future.
“I’m working on new material. So I’m planning on hopefully touring next fall and doing a real tour. And my goal for the next few years and what I’ve kind of been doing now is not stopping releasing music but scaling it back a little bit so that in between my traditional music album releases I can experiment with other forums because I studied screenwriting and playwriting in school,” Watsky continued in the Collegian interview. “So I’ve always wanted to be a multi-disciplinary writer. I did an essay collection in 2016 in between my albums and I’m working on a novel in between my next albums. So my goal is to just keep doing the music, keep touring but also take enough time off that I can do some writing experimentation and try and keep growing as a writer.”
