Mxdwn got the lowdown on multi-instrumentalist Valerie June’s announced tour dates for 2019. Her 18-date Astral Plane Solo Tour of the U.S is set to begin early next year starting on February 5 in Charlotte NC. The set will feature new and classic songs as June is currently working on her highly anticipated new album. Readers can listen to her most current release The Order of Time here.
Originally from Western Tennessee, June’s unique sound, deriving from R&B, Rock and Roll and blues has been shaped as much by her life as the blended musical genres of her city. Her life story is truly inspirational and has heavily influenced the course of her musical career.
As a teen she worked with her father a part-time promoter, hanging up posters around the town of Humboldt. When she was 18 she moved to Memphis and sang lead vocals in the band Bella Sun which she formed with her then-husband Michael Joyner. When Bella Sun disbanded, June taught herself guitar, determined to continue writing and performing her own music. She juggled three jobs a day and gigged in the evenings, her goal was to raise $50k to self-fund her own album. Seven years into perusing her goal with an impressive $45k tucked away she fell ill. Taken to hospital and diagnosed at 27 with diabetes. What followed was a four-year battle to gain back her strength, with her parent’s constant care she managed to pick up the six strings once again and finish what she started. Unfortunately, her earnings were eaten up by medical fees and insurance premiums but her resilience paid off after she set up her Kickstarter campaign allowing her to write the album Pushin’ Against A Stone (produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys) Which was based around her turmoil.
Her modern-day troubadour heart and profound message is embraced by people from all walks of life and is fast becoming an anthem for the masses.
In an interview with okayplayer.com, she said
“I feel called. I am called to share light and to shine through my art”
