North Charleston’s High Water Festival has announced its 2019 lineup. Set to take place April 13th and 14th 2019, the festival is a highlight of the city’s music culture. This year it brings hard hitting acts such as Leon Bridges and Lord Huron. The festival was started in 2017 as a way for the people of Charleston, NC to be able to enjoy both the culture of the city and the soothing folk music that comes with it. The festival was founded in part by Charleston based group Shovels and Rope, who are known for their classic folk inspired sound. The High Water Festival is meant to emulate that sound, and with singer songwriter Leon Bridges at the helm it is sure to amaze audiences.
Leon Bridges is an R&B singer whose soothing voice is inspired by classic American singers such as Otis Redding. He first burst onto the music scene in 2015 with his single “Coming Home,” which quickly won over audiences with its smooth instrumentals and iconic vocals. Bridges built off of that success over the course of the year, finishing it by releasing his album of the same name, Coming Home. He followed it up with a deluxe version of the album in 2016 featuring five brand new songs, including the beautifully crafted “Here in My Arms.” Bridges’ music fits as masterfully in today’s world as it would have in 1950. Earlier in 2018, Leon Bridges released his sophomore album Good Thing after an exciting release cycle that included the powerful single “Bet Ain’t Worth The Hand.” This new album introduced more people to Bridges’ signature sound and built upon his previous success. His performance at the High Water Festival will be one of the highlights of the weekend.
Other notable acts to the festival include folk rock band Lord Huron. The group, founded by singer and songwriter Ben Schneider, found success with the indie-folk sound that has become popular in recent years. Lord Huron released their first full length album, Lonesome Dreams, in 2012 and followed it up with Strange Trails in 2015. This album reached a wide audience in 2017 when the song “The Night We Met” was featured in the Netflix’s hit show “13 Reasons Why.” This critical exposure helped shoot both Lord Huron and “The Night We Met” into the mainstream, with the song being streamed over 300 million times on Spotify alone.
Americana inspired folk band The Head & The Heart will also be performing at the High Water Festival. The group began creating music in 2009, and since then they have amazed audiences with their blend of classic folk sounds and modern instrumentals. Their most recent album was released in 2016 and featured powerful songs such as “Take a Walk” and “Rhythm & Blues.” The group followed this with a re-release of many of their songs in a softer style in 2017’s Stinson Beach Sessions. Their set will be a must see for fans of folk rock. Tickets to the festival will be available on Thursday, November 15th.
