The fall out from the removal of Sal Abruscato from alternative metal band Life of Agony came to ahead on social media, with lead singer Mina Caputo calling the band’s former drummer a bigot on social media. Since Abruscato’s exit from the group, he has been replaced by Veronica Bellino.
According to the PRP, this erupted on social media after a relative amount of silence after a Twitter user asked Caputo, who came out as transgender in 2011, if they voted for Trump in the recent 2016 election. This user alleged that Abruscato made the original claim, leading the singer to address the drummer in a tweet that has since been deleted.
“Poor Sal was kicked out of Type O Neg kicked out of LifeOfAgony 2X, is a bigot, homophobe-Transphobic Supprtd TransBan in Military He’s a gas-lighter amngst his (wht was his mst loving friends)He’s Envious Spiteful combative & hates his own pathetic life Contemplate that genius!” Caputo stated in the tweet.
According to the Brooklyn Vegan, Abruscato left the band for “personal reasons,” back in January, which were never specified. The metal, along with the music community at large have been more sympathetic to Caputo due to Abruscato’s response, which is seen by many to include trans and homophobia due to the #janisjoplinsuglytwinsister he ended his Facebook post with.
“Look at what this piece of shit tweeted about me on Oct 25,” the former drummer stated in his Facebook post. “I haven’t said a word in 10 months, just been busy with my album and you suddenly need to talk smack about me. #fuckyoumina #janisjoplinsuglytwinsister.”
As of press time neither Type O Negative, who broke up in 2010, nor any other members of Life of Agony have commented on the controversy. Abruscato has deleted his earlier Facebook post, however he did call Caputo a “piece of shit,” on Twitter later today.
Since the drummers departure the band has continued touring this year, going across various west coast cities during the month of May. One of these performances that was scheduled for Las Vegas, Nevada was cancelled however, after terrorist threat was made against the band and the venue.
A former Bonanza High School teacher Leslie McGourty stated that they wanted to “poke,” a “lot of holes in a lot of people on Saturday,” in reference to the concert. Mc Goutry sent these threats via text messages sent to a friend of hers.
While McGoutry was supposedly a long time fan of the band, the former educator sought to “start a movement. Another me-too movement. But this time in which women feel empowered enough to become serial killers.” Las Vegas was the site of mass shooting in 2017 that took the lives of 59 concert attendees at the Harvest music festival.
Life of Agony are expected to perform in New York City this December, with shows planned at The Paramount and the Stone Pony on December 14th and 15th respectively. Tickets for the Paramount show start at $22.50 while the Stone Pony tickets begin at $28.
