Metal fans at Comic Con New York City may have low-key seen one of the best bands in the genre play a free live “show” this weekend when Mutoid Man played just outside of the popular pop-culture convention. See, the band was there originally within the convention itself, but when they plugged in along with Two Minutes to Late Night host Gwarsenio Hall (dressed up as GwarSailor Moon for the special occasion), they were kicked out and as an employee explained, “it’s in the contract…”
What did this mish-mashed band of cartoon character disguised metalheads do? Simply step outside and play an impromptu set. Selections from the band’s set included themes from various levels of Sonic The Hedgehog, the X-Men television program and a crossover-punk version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song (featuring Michelangelo on the drums). Frustrated gamers from the mid-’90s will no doubt be haunted by the dual harmonics of the theme from the “Green Hill Zone” in Sonic.
For those that are unaware, Two Minutes To Late Night is a metal-themed late-night-inspired talk show web series created by Jordan Olds (aka Gwarsenio Hall) that’s recorded in Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus venue. The backing band for the show just so happens to be the incredible metal band Mutoid Man, which features Cave In frontman Stephen Brodsky (dressed as Luigi), drummer Ben Kollar of Converge (dressed as Michelangelo) and bassist Nick Cageaeo (who also does sound at Saint Vitus — dressed as Mario).
