LA’s dark-pop band Holy Wars have shared their first new single of the year, titled “Born Dark,” The new single is produced by AFI’s Hunter Burgan and follows their last album Mother Father, released late last year, which was an honor of frontwoman Kat Leon’s parents. According to a press release, “The band also recruited Mat Mitchell (Nine Inch Nails, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle) to engineer the clashing of guitars and stunning vocal work, while Jeff Friedl (A Perfect Circle, The Beta Machine) added drums and Jeff Sahyoun from letlive rounded out the team and lent his expertise with additional engineering.” Prior to releasing “Born Dark,” Leon and fellow bandmate Nicolas Perez were hard at work, being recruited by FOX to write for TV trailers, inspiring the new song that much more. “Born Dark” is has a sound that the band has yet to achieve, and do so quite well.
The new track has been receiving much critical acclaim, with the Los Angeles Times calling it “…a distinctly heavy synth-rock sound that’s somewhere between Siouxsie and Suicide with a modern production sheen. Also, a rarity for a young band, Holy Wars already has an arresting visual aesthetic that should cut through the din of other goth-inclined local rock and electronic acts,” and Atwood Magazine stating “Holy Wars evokes dark pop/rock energy in her anthemic sound, crafting a unique alternative fusion that is at once reminiscent of, yet also far removed from the likes of Radiohead or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.” Check out the awesome new song below.
