Forget Throwback Thursday. Watching Radiohead’s Thom Yorke perform “High and Dry” with his pre-Radiohead band, Headless Chickens couldn’t wait any longer. The 1980s Headless Chickens version features a faster tempo with more prominent guitar, but the distinct chorus provides the foundation for the ballad that would later become a Radiohead hit.
Far Out Magazine reports that “redeveloping songs from their past is something Yorke and co have never shied away from.” The band has been known to reboot and alter songs from previous albums including “Nude” from 1997 and “Lift” originally recorded in 1996.
Radiohead was on tour this Summer and Yorke recently announced a Fall 2018 tour with Nigel Godrich and Tarik Barri. The “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes U.S. Tour” will begin on November 23rd in Philadelphia and will feature electronic performances of Yorke’s solo work.
“High and Dry” was featured on the band’s 1995 album The Bends, but clearly had been a song that Yorke took time to develop and perfect. Fifteen years after the Radiohead recording and even longer since the original Headless Chickens version was performed, video footage of a young Thom Yorke with his original band surfaced, providing some nostalgia to start off the week.
