Fans of ’90s shoegaze have reason to be excited as Brooklyn Vegan has reported that Miki Berenyi of Lush has formed a new band called Piroshka, which also features the likes of KJ McKillop of Moose, Justin Welch of Elastica, and Michael Conroy of Modern English. No one has any idea what the band will sound like, though the group will be making their live debut on November 27th at a location to be announced.
Berenyi fronted Lush during their heyday as part of the explosion of indie-rock and shoegaze bands in England in the ’90s, with the group initially breaking up in 1996. Surprisingly, Lush reformed for a full-blown tour and a new record in 2016 before breaking up again following bassist Phil King quitting the band.
Conroy is the bassist of Modern English, who reformed earlier this decade and ended up releasing a new record last year. The group became famous in the ’80s for their smash hit single “Melt With You,” and Conroy actually played bass with Lush during their final shows last year after King’s abrupt exit. Modern English had to cancel their US tour last year after guitarist Gary McDowell became ill and required emergency surgery.
Me and Moose enjoying fab photo session with Neil Stewart – here comes Justin! Ahhh… but where’s our fourth member?!
Struck me as amusing that we headed out to sunny Surrey countryside to take urban underpass shots.

Ok, so if you hadn’t pieced it together – mystery over. The new band is me, Moose, Justin Welch and (drum roll…) Michael Conroy (Modern English). He was such an amazing star stepping in at the last ever Lush show that I’ve not since let him out of my sight pic.twitter.com/KWqlzrKGqj

We’ll be playing London before the year is out and you can keep up with the details and revelations by following @piroshkaband on Twits, FB and Insta where info will be leaked and eked out in an irritatingly calculated fashion. pic.twitter.com/KD3vHKVOig
