Jonathan Davis of Korn Returns to the Stage For An Emotional Performance Following Wife’s Death

Jonathan Davis, the frontman for the metal band Korn returned to the stage this past week to play three shows celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band’s breakthrough 1998 third studio album, Follow the Leader. This is the first time, Davis had performed since his wife’s death just weeks earlier.

The first set of performances, according to Consequence of Sound, was held at The Masonic in San Francisco on September 12th. As the band was about to perform their song, “4U,” off their fourth studio album Issues, Davis stopped mid-track and with tears in his eyes, he expressed to the audience that “This was my wife’s favorite song. I’m sorry.” As Davis broke down, the whole theater never stopped cheering showering the singer with love and support. The frontman did not need to apologize, his fans were there for him.

The following night, Korn again took to the stage but this time at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. After completing the last song of the night, “My Gift to You,” and thanking the audience for 20 years of Follow the Leader, Davis embraced guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer. Just like the previous night, the fans in the audience showered the band with nonstop cheers and support.

On August 17th, Deven Davis, who was 39, passed away. There were reports from TMX stating that Jonathan Davis had filed a restraining order against his wife that same day preventing her from seeing her children. No official cause of death has yet to be revealed. Davis issued an emotional statement via Instagram that paid tribute to his wife but also gave light to mental illness and calling for understanding and support to those who struggle with it.

“If you know someone with a mental illness, have compassion and empathy, and know that they are not bad people, they are suffering,” he said. “I want this to inspire change. I want California law to change to help people like me help others get the help they need. How can someone who is sick realise themselves that they need help? She wasn’t well enough to realise how sick she really was, and wasn’t able to get the help for herself that she really needed. ‘This shouldn’t have to happen to other mothers, or anyone for that matter. I’d give anything to have the chance to hold her again.

“I’d give anything for my kids to have their mother back. I have comfort in knowing that now she has found freedom from her illness, and she is finally at peace.”
