Electronic artist Deanna Devore perfectly blends classic R&B and pop with modern dance music to great effect. That style is perfectly exemplified in her latest song “Effortlessly,” which we have the pleasure of premiering today.
It blends Sade-style vocal yearning and romanticized lyricism with a backdrop of electronic music — the operating word with this music is “smooth.” There are few artists that can so deftly combine husky vocals with hip-shifting rhythms in a manner that Devore does. The chord progressions are straight-up jazzy, lending a sophisticated vibe to the breezy pop vocals.
Despite the pleasant vibes exuded by “Effortlessly,” the subject matter of the lyrics is a bit darker. The song sounds like the perfect sensual jam, but listen a bit closer and you’ll unveil lyrics that are less than committed: “Your lips they part so effortlessly, I’m addicted somehow and your smile it falls ever suddenly, you’re conflicted right now.”
“We’ve all been there, the beginning of the end of a relationship when you can sense a change of heart in the other,” said Devore. “‘Effortlessly’ when it clicked and just as ‘effortlessly’ when it didn’t.”
Devore’s EP half and half comes out in two weeks on September 27. The record will consist of seven songs and is out on Double D Records.
