Babefest @ Warsaw 9/21

The third annual Babefest, a festival which advocates for pro-choice action in politics, has released the line-up for its first show in Brooklyn, taking place at Warsaw on September 21. The line-up will feature Ani DiFranco, the event curator, as she delivers a musical/spoken word performance in addition to musical performances by Torres, the Resistance Revival Chorus, and Amy Leon. Joining the performers will be Lucinda Guinn and Miranda Becker as speakers. The festival originated in Buffalo in 2016 and features activists and artists who perform to benefit Emily’s List, a political action committee that works to elect pro-choice Democratic women into public office. This year’s Babefest will highlight the importance of increasing the currently low voter turnout as a crucial component in electing pro-choice women into office, especially gearing up for midterm elections this November. The festival will also offer a half-day training session, supported by Emily’s List, to educate women interested in running for office. The training will take place after Babefest on September 22.

The founder of Babefest, Ani DiFranco, is a Grammy-winning feminist icon who founded her own label, Righteous Babe Records, and has released over twenty studio albums throughout her career. She is also known for her prominent activist work, supporting a range of social causes including racial justice, reproductive rights, gender equality, environmental issues, and prison reform. Joining DiFranco, Torres is known for her embracement of female sexuality through her music. The Resistance Revival Chorus is a chorus derived from the Women’s March, consisting of 70 women who sing songs of protest together and performed with Kesha at the 2018 Grammys. Finally, Amy Leon is an artist, poet, and educator who uses her art to explore intersectionality and created the #selfiepoetryproject movement which celebrates women of color.
