Neneh Cherry’s has revealed that her new album Broken Politics will arrive October 19 via Smalltown Supersound/Awal Recordings. The album is Cherry’s second to be produced entirely by Grammy-nominated musician Four Tet, and has been called “quieter and more reflective” than her previous album, Blank Project.
Cherry was inspired to name the title of her new song “Shot Gun Shack” while at the funeral of late jazz musician Ornette Coleman.“I don’t even remember who said it, but I was like, ‘Shotgun shack! That’s a cool term,'” she said. “It’s about gun culture—the notion of war zones and the tragedies that guns bring there.” The track comes on the heels of the lead single “Kong,” which was co-produced by Four Tet and Massive Attack’s 3D.
Blank Project was Cherry’s fourth studio album and was written by the artist and her husband Cameron McVey. It was released on February 25, 2014 , and was Cherry’s first album of solo music in 16 years. It features a guest appearance by Robyn, and includes work with prior collaborators, synth/drum duo RocketNumberNine. Cherry wrote the songs on the record as a way to mourn for her mother, who died in 2009. The album received widespread critical acclaim upon release.
