Indie rock post-punk veterans the Twilight Sad have released a music video for their buzzing single from July “I/m Not Here [missing face].” The clip itself was directed by the band’s live keyboardist Brendan Jay Smith and edited by Michael Sherrington.
The video is comprised of a sinister yet melancholy (or perhaps melancholy yet sinister) collage of VHS camcorder footage of (what is presumably) Glaswegian suburbia, with the visuals getting more and more distorted and warped as the song progresses.
“I was attempting to play ‘Ogives’ by Erik Satie,” explained guitarist Andy MacFarlane about the inception of the song. “But I’m really shit at piano so it didn’t happen, but I came up with the music using those chord shapes. So from my perspective, it’s a bad cover version of that piece of music.”
The song, released this past July, showcases the Twilight Sad in all of it’s post-punk glory, showing that it has never left top shape.
Frontman James Graham described the track’s lyrical content as being “about my ongoing battle with not liking myself, trying to be a good person but constantly feeling like I’m failing myself and everyone I care about.”
It is not clear whether the single is a one-off or an indication of more music to come, but fans are sure to be hoping the latter, and that perhaps more music will sound as phenomenal as “I/m Not Here [missing face].”
