Primitive Race – the supergroup assembled by Chris Kniker that has featured contributions ranging from Raymond Watts and Mark Gemini Thwaite to the late Chuck Mosley and Dale Crover. Today, we are honored to present the premiere of the latest lyric video from the band’s masterful second LP Soul Pretender, a song called “Bed Six.”
Soul Pretender marked a bit of a departure for the Kniker and company following their industrial-heavy self-titled debut. For the band’s sophomore release, Mosley and Crover, who have more roots in hard rock and alternative metal than they do industrial, were brought into the fold. The result is an album that is a significant departure from the band’s debut, taking on more of an alternative/hard rock style that is very apparent in the new single, “Bed Six.”
“Bed Six” does have slight industrial influences in the mix. However, the live drumming, swamp-boogie style keyboards, ripping guitar solo and Mosley’s sneering vocals add a healthy does of classic hard rock to the mix. Lyrically, the song touches on staying true to yourself and in the second verse, longing to be near the subject of the song. The music on this song was composed by Erie Loch, Mark Gemini Thwaite and Chris Kniker.
Tragically, just around the time that Soul Pretender was released, Mosley, the band’s lead singer for the album, died. This cut short any hope of a tour around the album or any potential follow-up using the same lineup. The band released a video for “Cranial Matter” as a tribute to the late singer, who also served as the vocalist for Faith No More and Bad Brains, as well as having his own solo career.
