Classic Rock Revived
The Lemon Twigs’ latest release Go To School sounds like the soundtrack to a musical that is focused around bringing classic rock back to life. The album opens very dramatically, with upbeat instrumentals that lead into vocals that start to tell a story. This unique structure doesn’t seem to go anywhere throughout the rest of the album.
Everything about the second track on the album, “The Student Becomes The Teacher,” embodies the dramatization that would come along with a musical. It is easy for the listeners to follow along with the storyline specifically in this song, as well as feel the emotions that are being sung. The best part about this track is probably that it starts very slow and then slowly builds into something grand in nature.
As the album goes on there are some tracks sprinkled in that break up the dramatic nature of the entire thing. The first track to do this is “The Lesson.” While it breaks away from the dramatic nature of the album, it definitely continues to possess the sound of a classic rock anthem. The acoustic guitar featured on the track is quite pleasant and makes you feel like it should be played on a warm summer day.
“The Bully” is also a slightly more chill track on the album, but in a different way. This time around the acoustic guitar isn’t as present, but instead, a pretty piano melody is. About halfway through the track, it takes a slight turn when trumpets are added to the mix. It might seem like this would be obnoxious, but the flow of this particular track is impressive and should definitely not be overlooked.
The amount of thought and work that had to have gone into the themes on this album needs to be acknowledged. Including the bonus track, this album has sixteen full songs on it, and each one contributes to the story in one way or another. The best part about this is that it is easy to see how passionate the members of The Lemon Twigs are about telling this particular story, which in turn only makes it more believable.
Go To School ends on a whimsical note with the track “If You Give Enough.” The strings featured on this track are especially noteworthy because they add a beautiful feeling to the track overall. The strings are matched with slightly higher vocals, which go hand-in-hand. Once the listener finishes this album they are sure to feel like they made it to the end of quite a dramatic story.
