Phil Elverum, Bret Lunsford and Karl Blau Returns As D+ Announces First Album in Ten Years Destroy Before Listening

Phil Elverum is someone who you may know from his musical projects which include performing in Mount Erie and The Microphones and who secretly married to Academy Award-nominated actress Michelle Williams. His band, Mount Erie is set to release their new live album after next month.  Elverum is also part of another musical group, which is reconvening after a decade called D+ which he formed with fellow members Bret Lunsford (Beat Happening) and Karl Blau in 1996.

The trio is all veterans of the Anacortes, Washington DIY-indie scene and have been together since the 90s but have done alright throughout the years apart. Now, according to Pitchfork, the trio have come together once again to make new music together. D+ has released their first full-length studio album under the band’s moniker in over ten years.

The album is titled Destroy Before Listening and the band is selling the CD version of the album for $10 but according to Elverum, in a post, he made on his Twitter page on Saturday, “For $10 extra you can get the CDR pre-smashed and receive plastic shards in the mail.” Blau also posted on his Twitter page this past week with the news exclaiming, “You thought you’d never hear from us again? Well think again.”

Destroy Before Listening is also available to stream via Bandcamp but only three of the songs are available through the platform; “Oh Well,” “Witch Key,” and “Tao of Ursula.” You can stream these songs down below.

The album includes nine songs which, according to Elverum, date back to 2013. “These songs were important to me/us when recorded in our imitable way five years ago,” Elverum said in a statement. “Thinking the D+ grade might be raised somehow, I delayed the release to our imagined community. As you consider disobeying the album’s puzzling name, you have our thanks. It is now here to do or not with it what you will.” The last album that D+ released was back in 2008 with What Is Doubt For.
