Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus will go on tour this fall across the country, with three individual sets from each musician. Recently, the three popular female indie rockers announced their new project, boygenius, which will feature an upcoming self-titled EP that will drop on November 9 via Matador. So far, they’ve released three songs that are currently streaming, each song featuring one of the three artists leading vocals. They include “Stay Down” led by Julien Baker, “Me & My Dog” led by Phoebe Bridgers, and “Bite The Hand” by Lucy Dacus. Although the tour is not a boygenius tour, they teased the possibility of unexpected performances saying, “You never know what surprises might arise.” All three women will wrap up separate September and October tours before embarking on their tour together.
The three musicians have orbited each other over the past few years, especially as prominent figures in the indie scene. Baker and Dacus are labelmates under Matador as they continue working with the label for boygenius. The three have also shared the stage several times, as Baker had Dacus perform with her for shows on tour in 2016. Baker also had Bridgers open for her on tour in 2016 and collaborated on stage together this summer at Winnipeg Folk Fest and Eaux Claires. On the formation of their latest project, Baker says, “When we met, Lucy and Phoebe and I were in similar places in our lives and our musical endeavors, but also had similar attitudes toward music that engendered an immediate affinity.” She goes on to say that they decided to make an EP because they had so many songs and ideas that worked together and didn’t want to limit their ambitions. “Everyone seemed both confident enough to present ideas and fight for their individual vision, but considerate and humble enough to make decisions which ultimately served the song,” she says. Despite not being a boygenius tour, it will be a treat for fans to experience all three artists under the same roof, building off each other’s collaborative and encouraging energy.
Catch Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus at Brooklyn Steel on November 6 and 7. And don’t forget to catch Bridgers this September as she performs at The National’s There’s No Leaving New York festival at Forest Hills Stadium.
