As fans feverishly await the new Fucked Up album Dose Your Dreams, which is set to be released this October, the band has released a new single and music video in the form of “Normal People.” Musically speaking the song continues the band’s combination of hardcore punk fury, indie-rock songcraft, and confessional singer-songwriter influenced lyrics.
As usual, lead singer Father Damian’s furious rasp gives the song plenty of power and meshes perfectly with the rolling guitar riffs, and the snazzy saxophone leads that pop up halfway through the track. The music video for “Normal People” is equally eclectic, following three different characters and their wild interactions with city life. The video is set up as a long dialogue between Father Damian and an elderly woman named Joyce Tops, who opens his mind and takes him on a metaphysical journey. Each of the three or so storylines adds up into one coherent whole, a thesis on modern living.
Fucked Up have become one of the most prolific and incredible bands in the hardcore underground, with their most recent release, 2017’s awesome Year of the Snake, which showed that the group is capable of mixing many different musical styles into one intoxicating sonic brew. The band also recently parted ways with their longtime record label Matador, and so Dose Your Dreams will be their first release on Merge Records.
Fucked Up will be taking their overpowering live show on the road this fall and winter as they have a full slate of tour dates lined up in North America and Europe.
