Mount Eerie has been one of the most prolific indie-folk bands in recent history and it’s about time we have heard some news from them. As Pitchfork has written, Phil Elverum, vocalist and founder of Mount Eerie, has announced a Live Album version titled (after). Not only is there an announcement, but their live version of “Soria Moria” is out, as well.
Unlike the studio version, the echoes and natural sounds of the environment give the song a more angelic quality that is hard to create within the parameters of a studio album. Hearing the natural voice and guitar, uninhibited by studio tricks, give the most perfect timbre to the most perfect song. Listen to it below.
When talking about the live album, Elverum asks and says, “Does it bring anything new to the songs you hear? My hope is: yes. You can hear the breath in the room. You can feel th simultaneous intimacy and immensity. This is a recording of these ultra-intimate songs living in the real world among people.” It seems with this quote, Elverum though excited to share, still has soe reservations about performing songs as emotional and intimate as these are. These new live recording bring about a vulnerability so apparent that tears begin to stream the eyes.
These songs, as Elverum talks, were not created to share with the world. While dealing and handling with the loss of his wife, the singer began to write music as a form of therapy. Though he never had any intention of sharing these songs, we can thank the stars he did. It is just too beautiful.
