Parquet Courts are back with their sixth studio album, Wide Awake!, which released in May of this year via Rough Trade. The band hit the road this past spring touring the US, with a follow-up UK and Europe leg of the tour taking place this fall with a smattering of additional US dates. Since the release of Wide Awake!, the Texas-turned-Brooklyn rockers have paid several visits to their New York hometown with intimate shows following the album’s release, including a lunch-hour show at Rough Trade, a show at Public Arts, a Rocks Off Concert Cruise, and a performance at Elsewhere’s rooftop. The city can’t seem to get enough of the four-piece as they’ve announced a 12/08 show at Hammerstein Ballroom among the list of newly added shows to their fall lineup.
With Wide Awake!’s massive appeal, it’s no wonder the band has received the greenlight for additional shows around the country. The album blends Parquet Courts’ penchant for punchy, angry songs with a funky influence, creating a kind of dance-punk sound that is infectious from the first listen. In embracing this sound, the band asked Danger Mouse to produce the album. Of the unexpected collaboration, singer A. Savage said, “I personally liked the fact that I was writing a record that indebted to punk and funk, and [Danger Mouse]’s a pop producer who’s made some very polished records. I liked that it didn’t make sense.” The daring collaboration and mixing of genres pays off, creating an unforgettable album that stands out among Parquet Courts’ already extensive discography.
If you missed Parquet Courts’ New York City mini-circuit back in June – fear not. Catch them at the Hammerstein Ballroom 12/08 with opening support from jazz pioneers, Sun Ra Arkestra. Tickets on sale now.
