Animal Collective recently announced their double album, Tangerine Reef, will be released August 17. Consequence of Sound reports their forthcoming audio-visual record is a collaboration between AnCo members Avey Tare, Deakin, and Geologist and “avant-garde coral macro-videography” group Coral Morphologic to honor the 2018 International Year of the Reef.
Now, Animal Collective and Coral Morphologic have shared a visually dynamic, psychedelic trailer for their upcoming record. “A Short Trip Through Tangerine Reef” runs just over 3 minutes and stimulates the senses by showcasing the vibrant and complex life of coral.
Coral Morphologic formed in 2007 by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician J.D. McKay in Miami. The duo have been featured on National Geographic Channel, BBC and Vice Magazine for their pioneering visuals. They use art and science in tandem to “document aquaculture and protect Miami’s (and the world’s) coral.”
Brian Weitz of Animal Collective says of their work, “Symbiosis is inherent in [Coral Morphologic’s] work. They are a modern day Jean Painlevé—using living organisms they cultivate in their lab as the source for their art, while simultaneously creating an interest in those creatures outside of that context.”
Animal Collective, Stereogum reports, have also released the single “Hair Cutter,” off Tangerine Reef along with a video directed by John McSwain and Coral Morphologic via Apple Music. The entire film for their upcoming album will debut on the band’s website August 17—the same day the record is available via streaming, CD, and double LP.
