John Butler Trio Announces Fall 2018 North American Tour Dates and Shares New Single “Home”

John Butler Trio is an Australian roots/rock band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler announced today their first album in four years; entitled Home will come out this Fall on September 28th via Nettwerk Records. Their last album, Flesh & Blood, was released back in 2014. With news of the trio’s return to new music, the award-winning band has shared the title track off their forthcoming album accompanied by lyric video. Fans of the Australian band can pre-order Home now. Scroll down below to watch and listen to the new track as well as artwork cover and tracklist for Home.

The song, “Home,” is revealing of the hardships of being on the road away from the warmth of home. The opening of the song says it all.  “When the curtains are drawn / everybody has gone / I sit here all alone / all the bottles are dry / coming down from the high / all I want is home.” Within the lyric video, there is footage of the band performing on the road, the camera focuses on the good times yet there are hints of loneliness with every movement. Each time Butler sings home, his voice drags out in a sad longing to be back to that place of familiarity.

According to the press release, the song “captures the emotional and sonic landscape that would become the bedrock of this album – a complex mesh of poignant lyrics, industrial rhythms, and a grinding electronic soul.”

Though Butler continues to create and make music as a trio, the album was primarily recorded and produced as a solo effort with long-time friend Jan Skubiszeski, the multi-award-winning Australian producer, composer, and sound engineer.

In the press release, Butler writes and reflects on his journey all the while making the album.

“I’ve been dealing with anxiety on and off for ages. I hadn’t always been able to name it. It was in this fractured state that I started trying to wrangle this new mob of songs – wild horses I’d met over the last four years. Songs about family life, love, what it means to be a modern man and personal insights into dealing with my anxious projections. Songs have always been my friends. No matter what I’m going through they help me convey the things my heart feels but my brain is too afraid to say. But grappling with this herd in this state would prove uniquely tricky. As things turned out that journey would actually be critical in helping me deal with my shit. In the meantime though, I was lost and somehow I had to find my way home. There was no choice. Like that classic children’s book, ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’ says; “Can’t go under it. Can’t go over it. Can’t go around it. MUST go through it,” says Butler.

“Throughout the years that it took to make this album, there were tears and frustration, confusion and chaos. But there was also family and friends, honesty and vulnerability, gardens and harvest, service and surrender. And in amongst it all, ultimately, there was joy,” says Butler. Adding, “It turns out that breakdowns can lead to breakthroughs if you’re willing to get under the hood and get your hands dirty.”
