Sinead O’Connor, the Irish born singer who now goes by Magda Davitt, debuted a tender new song today exclusively via The Irish Sun. According to Brooklyn Vegan, the demo song, “Milestones,” is Davitt’s first new music in four years. You can stream the song down below.
“Milestones” is a heartbreaking track revealing the inner demons of Davitt. There is truth and honesty behind the music even though it is just a demo, Davitt’s new music is a masterpiece. Her lyrics transcend and its powerful message that anyone can relate to. “This is where I get to be me/This is where you don’t get to make me/This is where you don’t get to create me.”
The new song comes after a few turbulent years for Davitt. She worked on the song with fellow Irish born electronic musician and producer David Holmes. She told the Sun that, “David wrote the music. I wrote the lyrics and melody. This is just a first demo for fans because they never get to hear a demo. I thought it would be fun to share it.”
On his Facebook page, Holmes wrote, “ok so I wasn’t expecting this track to be heard so soon as it’s a demo, so it’s not finished, but it’s out there, and I’m very proud of it. It’s a new exclusive track by Sinead O Connor that I co-wrote and produced in my studio in Belfast. I’ll never forget the moment she sang this for the first time. It was a jaw-dropping moment.”
Davitt is also working a new album, No Mud No Lotus, though fans will have to wait because the album won’t come out for at least another year. According to Davitt, it won’t see the light of day “before October 2019.” Her last album as Sinead O’Connor, was in 2014 entitled I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss.
Back in March, a series of spring tour dates was announced but was canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Davitt went on Dr. Phil this past year to open up about her struggles with mental health and talking about her abusive childhood, her struggles with depression and suicide attempts. A heartbreaking episode that revealed the inner demons of a beloved artist. \It was on that episode that she announced she was changing her name. According to Davitt, she wanted to be “free of parental curses,” adding “Sinead O’Connor is gone. That person is gone.”
