Arctic Monkeys “Do A Little White Blood Cells in Detroit” with Cover of The White Stripes’ Song “The Union Forever”

The Arctic Monkeys performed another salute to their garage-rock revival roots, this time in Detroit, Michigan by performing cover of the “The Union Forever,” by the White Stripes. This performance took place on August 1st as part of their summer tour, in promotion of their latest album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.

Detroit is the home of the White Stripes , who are largely considered one of the leading figures of the garage-rock revival movement alongside bands like the Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes. On July 25th, the Arctic Monkeys performed a similar tribute to The Strokes in their hometown of New York City, covering “Is This It?” off their 2002 debut album of the same name.

“The Union Forever,” is off the White Stripes third studio album White Blood Cells, which helped the band break into the mainstream due to the success of its hit single “Fell in Love with a Girl.” White Blood Cells garnered critical acclaim upon release, and is considered one of the essential albums from the garage-rock revival movement alongside Is This It? by The Strokes, Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not by the Arctic Monkeys.

Since the release of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino in May, the Arctic Monkeys have landed several high profile headlining gigs, including Lollapalooza this weekend and the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October. In addition, the band released music video for Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino’s title track in July.

Since the break-up of the White Stripes in 2011, the band’s front-man Jack White has been a prolific solo artist, joining the Arctic Monkeys as a headliner at Lollapalooza and landing a headlining spot at New York City’s Governors Ball. At Governors Ball in June, White performed version of the White Stripe’s classic “Icky Thump,” with new lyrics mocking current US president Donald Trump.
