After a long hiatus, the Swedish singer and popstar Robyn is back with her first new single “Missing U,” her first official solo release since 2010’s Body Talk. The nearly five-minute long track was finished in collaboration with Metronomy’s Joseph Mount and long-time collaborator Klas Åhlund.
“Missing U,” also made its official premiere on the airwaves via Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. Robyn will also be joining the DJ on August 5th in Ibiza, alongside acts such as the synth-pop group Cassius and DJ Mark Ronson.
In addition to this single release, Robyn made a short-film accompanying the track entitled “Missing U – A Message To My Fans.” This short film gives a brief yet insightful look into the monthly This Party Is Killing You fan night in Brooklyn, New York.
The film opens up at the Monster Cycle gym in New York City, before turning its focus to one of its members, Russ Marshalek, a DJ and founder of This Party Is Killing You. Marshalek explains how the event began as just an idea between friends to play Robyn’s music, which eventually exploded in popularity, causing the group to organize the event on a monthly basis at the Brooklyn Bowl.
After this introduction, the organizers explained how they had fans call in to leave Robyn a series of voicemails discussing how their music left an impact on them. Robyn is then heard listening to several of the voicemails, which includes a man stating that Robyn “was the soundtrack to [his]literal coming out of the closet,” in addition to several fans expressing their love for the singer and urging her to come to the Robyn-themed party.
Robyn is then shown walking into the Brooklyn Bowl, to the surprise and applause of her eager fans, for a small performance at the club as “Missing U,” is played in the background. As the film comes to the close, a voicemail by a married couple expressing their adoration is played in the background.
“Missing U’ is a song about this trippy thing that happens when people disappear, it’s like they become even more clear and you see them everywhere,” Robyn explained in a press release. “It’s also maybe a little bit of a message to my fans… that I’ve missed them.”
Robyn teased the release of “Missing U,” back in July, sharing a small snippet of the track on Twitter. While the singer didn’t make any official solo releases during her hiatus, the singer performed demo’s of new tracks such as “Be Mine,” and “Honey,” back in May at the Red Bull Music Festival.
The singer also has contributed to several collaborative projects during her hiatus, working with Swedish producer Mr. Tophat back in 2017, and collaborating with Metronomy for “Hang Me Out To Dry,” back in 2016. While details of her new album are scarce, she has promised to release the project some time this year.
