Indie folk act Phosphorescent, the nome de plume of Matthew Houck, is back with their first new album in five years, titled C’est La Vie. In addition to announcing the new album, the band has released a new song called “New Birth in New England.”
The new album will come out on October 5, 2018 via rising indie label Dead Oceans. It will be the band’s first new album since 2013’s Muchacho which was critically acclaimed for its ability to meld folk rock traditions with soft rock melodies and atmosphere. The new album also follows Houck’s journey into the wonderful world of fatherhood, as well as what must have been a massive transition in moving from New York City to Nashville, TN.
In the new song from C’est La Vie, Houck disguises numerations on fatherhood that the title suggests behind an upbeat pop melody and everyday storytelling about life. It provides an accessible entryway into what, judging from Houck’s prowess on previous Phosphorescent releases, will be an enlightening and enjoyable experience.
