Canada has been kind enough to gift us with some amazing music over the decades. From Rush to Arcade Fire to Metric, the great North seems to be bursting with talent. Now, Canada has fed us even more amazing music, this time a new single from the critically acclaimed Metric. Alongside this video the four have also released a music video for “Dressed to Suppress,” which is the first single from their upcoming album. The album itself will see the light of day this September 21st via the record label MMI/Crystal Math Music. Check out the video below.
The video opens in black and white of what looks like backstage with the heavy synth from the single jump-starting the entire video. Echoed vocals come through singer Emily Haines as the camera pans up to her silhouetted face. As the video moves on, the cameraman gives the audience an organic feel as they walk around a live performance and/or rehearsal of the song. As classic Metric, a heavy guitar comes in as an introduction to a much more lively section of the song.
The music video carries on as a representation of a more intimate moment of the band during their rehearsal. The close-ups and walking movements of the camera act as a gate in which one can be one with the performance, as if to receive a secret look into sweaty, emotional world of live music. Directed by Justin Broadbent, the video is a simple yet insanely fun and interactive mode in which to represent an incredible band at their messy best.
When discussing the single, Haines says, that, “lyrically, the song explores the maze of conflicts we encounter in our attempts at finding and holding onto love; the absurd mating rituals we routinely perform; and the vast divide between the desires our appearances can imply and the way we actually feel inside. Sonically, it’s one of the most intense songs on the album. We’re already playing it live and it’s getting stronger every night. The contrast between the delicate, dreamy opening and the heavy riffs of the verse and chorus match the dramatic emotional shifts we all go through when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, the push and pull of retaining our own identities in love.”
The song “Dress to Suppress” is the second song given to us by Metric. Recently, the band premiered the song “Dark Saturday” on the all famous NPR show “All Things Considered.” There is no title of tracklisting for the album, yet, however, you can still order the “Dark Saturday” single on vinyl via their site here.
