Santigold has announced she will release new, a summer-inspired mixtape-style project with Dre Skull entitled I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions.  Santigold and Dre Skull  bonded over their shared passion for Reggae and Afro-Caribbean music during a writing session. Their mutual interests eventually grew into a 10 song recording session they named The Gold Fire Sessions. They recorded the majority of the songs over the course of two weeks, playing with Reggae and Afro-Caribbean influences while bringing together classic Santigold ideas with the spirit of the new work. The social commentary, humor, and fearless sound that is synonymous with her work take on exciting new forms on this project.

The record has many themes which speak to the current social climate: anti-materialism, empowerment, female strength, resilience, and not compromising oneself but staying one’s course even when the tide has turned. Santigold spoke to Pitchfork about the project, and said this concerning the commentary inherent in her work: “The whole point was: “These are the issues on my mind right now. Just throw it down. Don’t be too precious about the lyrics. That’s why I called it The Gold Fire Sessions, because it’s a collection of songs from the moment.” When asked about specific tracks being inspired by the political climate she added, “It’s not political. It’s more social commentary. Politics are wack—it’s mostly about the characters instead of the issues, like how religion is about religion instead of spirituality. But I think a lot of the issues playing out in politics right now are super relevant, and I care a lot about them,” she said. “There’s a song called “Coo Coo Coo”—it’s a very feminist song about being annoyed when guys try to catcall you on the street. There are also a lot of songs that feel really light. It’s a summer reggae record, too.”

The album will be out on July 27th. The single “Run The Road” recently premiered today as Zane Lowe’s World Record on Beats 1 on Apple Music. The song and album tracklist are listed below.
