Kevin Parker, the guitarist and lead vocals of Tame Impala, the psychedelic rock band from Australia hinted earlier this week about new material from his band. Parker went on Beats 1 earlier this week, and in the interview with Matt Wilkinson, he talked about his expectations on whether there is new music from his band somewhere in the future. According to Pitchfork, the 32-year-old Australian discussed the potential new album, which would follow their last record, Currents, the band’s third album which was released back in the summer of 2015. Yes, it’s been three long years since fans of Tame Impala danced to new music.
Parker went into details on where he was at with new material, saying that, “I would very much hope so [to release a new Tame Impala record in summer 2019], I’d be very disappointed if we didn’t have something out by then,” he said. “I mean, I love playing the songs live, I love playing ‘Currents’ songs, I love playing ‘Lonerism’ songs and everything, but I think I’m ready to play some other songs live. All the instinctual things are there.”
He says that he is “ready to play some other songs live” and will be “very disappointed” if there isn’t a new record out next summer.
Though, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up quite yet. Parker insists that “I like that the first time people hear it is the kind of recorded glory,” he adds, “like the premeditated thing that I’ve spent two years on, rather than being half drunk bashing it out on stage, hitting clanger notes.” It makes sense though, good music takes time to get right, and if what Parker says is true, fans will gladly wait a little longer.
In the sessions, Parker also talked about his recent and future collaborations including one with singer/songwriter SZA, saying, “I hope so, man,” when asked if the previously teased SZA and Mark Ronson collabs would ever receive an official release.” Obviously, I think it’s like, I mean, we were just super excited when it was happening. I hope it sees the light of day. … This is not telling of the situation or anything, but when we were working with SZA that was like 10 days before her album came out and since then her album’s just exploded and she’s been a really busy person.”
