The former frontman of the acclaimed Montreal electronic duo Majical Cloudz, Devon Welsh, has revealed details on his debut solo album entitled Dream Songs due to come out August 24th. The album is produced by Austin Tufts of Braids and will include a collection of 10 tracks inspired by the passing seasons and the intricacies of love and will feature Welsh’s powerful vocals.
Today, along with these album details, Welsh shared the video for the album’s opening track called “By The Daylight.” The video shows Welsh standing in the woods, where wildflowers grow, and a stream flows by. In the song, Welsh’s sings, “If you see an insect / don’t try to squash it / things more powerful than you control the actions in your life.” Of this song, Devon says, “Life often seems like a catastrophe of one kind or another, events seem out of our control. Sometimes it feels like we’re just swept along in a tide we don’t really understand, and this song is about experiencing that feeling.”
Dream Songs also includes two previously released tracks “I’ll Be Your Ladder” and “Vampires.” The media praised both songs. The album is set to come out on August 22nd on You Are Accepted.
Welsh is a singer, songwriter, and artist who hails from Montreal. His last two albums, he released as the frontman of the Canadian electronic band Majical Clouds, which consists of Welsh, and variously Matthew E. Duffy and Matthew Otto. The project combined aspects of poetry, hardcore, minimalism, and folk. Unfortunately, the project came to an end in 2016 because it, according to the press release, “had fulfilled its intentions. At the time of the breakup, Welsh had this to say. “The band has come to a very natural conclusion, as it has communicated everything it was meant to and reached more people than we would have ever imagined.”
After the project disbanded, Welsh took a break from music for a year. “I wrote songs but didn’t think about their purpose or about anything at all to do with the music industry or if I would be releasing music in the future,” he said about this time, “I just tried to grow as a person and do some learning.” During this free time, Welsh wrote songs which would eventually become the basis for his solo album, Dream Songs.
